Warning Signs Your Furnace May Require Service/Repair

Below are a few general warning signs you can keep your eyes out for. These signs indicate that your furnace might need service, and soon!

Some of those warning signs include:

  • Electric Ignition or pilot light issues
  • The furnace doesn’t heat at all
  • The furnace is struggling to reach the desired temperature
  • Frequent cycling
  • The blower runs continuously
  • The furnace is unusually noisy

Fortunately, there are a few simple steps you can take before calling a technician that may rectify your issue. Read on for more detailed information.

POTENTIAL GAS LEAK
If you suspect a furnace gas leak, you should address it immediately! IMPORTANT: If you smell natural gas in your home or near the furnace, DO NOT light any matches/lighters. Additionally, avoid turning any switches off or on. If the gas odor is strong, immediately evacuate your house, leaving the door open and call a professional from your gas company from a safe location.

Furnace Tips and Advice for Repairs

If your furnace runs and provides some heat but not enough
  • Check your vents and vacuum out any debris
  • Check to see if anything is blocking your vents impeding the flow of warm air
  • Ensure that your filter is clean and free from buildup
  • Check to make sure the registers are open
  • Make sure your thermostat is set to “heat” and the fan set to “auto” or “on” (You can then try raising the temp. 5 degrees and waiting a few minutes)
  • Check the circuit breaker or power supply
  • Check for and reduce any household drafts

Blower Runs Continuously

Check the thermostat to see if the Fan switch has been left in the “on” position. Air Dynamics recommends setting the fan position to “Auto.” In the “On,” “Low,” “Medium” or “High” modes, the fan will run continuously draining unnecessary energy. If it is already set to “Auto” and you are still experiencing this issue, contact one of our pros at (215)571-9471 to have your unit serviced.

Furnace Does Not Heat At All

Thermostat malfunctions cause most heating system failures. Other causes can include a tripped circuit breaker or a blown fuse. In the case of combustion furnaces, a pilot light may simply have gone out. If the heat still does not come on when you adjust the thermostat above room temperature you can try the following:

  • Check to make sure the furnace power switch is in the “On” position. The switch is usually located either next to, or inside of the furnace cabinet. If it is “Off” turn it on and wait a few minutes for the furnace to engage.
  • If you have a gas furnace, the pilot light may have gone out or the gas valve supplying the furnace may be shut off.
  • Check to see if a circuit has tripped. If so, you can reset it by turning it off and then on again.
  • The motor in your furnace may require a reset if it has experienced a recent overload (often caused by lack of maintenance and filter build up). Locate the reset button near the blower motor’s housing and if you find a reset button press it. If nothing happens, wait at least 30 minutes for the motor to cool down and try again.
  • Check to ensure your thermostat is functioning properly.

If you have tried the methods above and the furnace is still not heating it might be time to call in one of our pros! You can easily reach us 24/7 by calling (215)571-9471 for assistance. Our knowledgeable staff is ready and standing by to assist you anytime you need it.

Noisy Furnace or Duct Work

Rattling Noises

If your furnace seems to be making rattling noises when running, check the cabinet. Ensure the cover panels are screwed on tight. Tighten any loose panels as needed.

Grinding Sounds

If the blower is making a grinding noise, shut off the unit to avoid causing damage and call a professional at Air Dynamics right away!

Change the air filters: Dirty air filters often lead to a multitude of furnace problems. It is wise to clean or replace the filter(s) on your unit once a month, according to the manufacturer’s directions.

Whether in a commercial or residential setting, the same basic problems plague furnaces. Fortunately, the professionals at Air Dynamics are ready to address them!

How Often Should You Worry About Furnace Maintenance & Tune-Ups?

The good news is that furnace maintenance and tune-ups are not something you need to worry about on a monthly basis. In fact, it is only necessary once a year for residential homeowners. Note: Commercial recommendations are often different from those for residential homeowners.

There are numerous benefits to getting regular furnace maintenance and tune-ups. Not only will it help to ensure your unit remains efficient, which in turn helps to keep your utility bills at a lower cost each month. But, you will also reduce the amount of strain your furnace is under while operating. This can greatly increase the unit’s overall longevity.

Furnace Installation and Replacement

Should You Repair Or Replace Your Furnace?

This question is a tough question for homeowners to answer: “Should I repair or replace my furnace?” It’s tough to answer because you’re not sure if the timing is right yet. You’re worried if you replace it too early, you may be paying for an appliance when you don’t need to. But if you repair it, and it dies a year later, then you would have wasted your money. You’re not the only one wondering what the right choice is. However, the answer is more complex than you’d think. The first thing to keep in mind is that over time, your furnace loses efficiency. Costing more money and becoming prone to unexpected break downs.

Are you tired of that old furnace struggling to keep up with the bitter winter weather? Do you dream of coming home to relax in a warm home without the worry of your unit potentially leaving you to tough it out in the cold?

The truth is, there is no one single reason to replace your furnace. It depends on several different factors. Here are 5 things to consider when deciding if you should repair or replace:

  • Your Furnace Units Age
The typical “lifespan” for a furnace is an average of about 15 to 20 years. If your furnace is old, worn out, inefficient, or significantly oversized, the simplest solution is to replace it with a modern high-efficiency model. So, if your furnace is past its prime, it may not be worth repairing; since the frequency of repairs often increases the older the unit is.
  • The Frequency of Repairs
Did you need to repair your furnace this past year? What about the year before that? Needing a major repair on a furnace within a 2 year period is too frequent. This is often an indicator that your furnace could become a “money pit” as time goes on. Especially if your unit has not been properly maintained.
  • Energy bills are Too High
Over time your furnace will become less efficient. So, even if your unit is old and fully functioning, your heating costs could be outrageous as a result. Therefore it may be prudent to consider investing in a newer more energy-efficient unit—especially if your current one is well past its time.
  • Home Comfort
If your furnace just isn’t meeting your comfort needs, then don’t feel bad not wanting to repair it. Invest in a newer more energy-efficient model and start saving on those utility bills. You’ll be glad you did!
  • Expired Warranty & Major Part Repair
If a major part such as the heat exchanger fails and your furnace warranty has expired, you could find yourself stuck with a costly repair bill. The older your furnace is, the less likely you’ll want to sink money into replacing the heat exchanger or other costly parts.

You’ve decided you might be ready to take the plunge and invest in a new energy-efficient furnace. But, you’re not quite sure where to begin.

Don’t worry – we understand that trying to figure all of this out by yourself can be complicated, and leave you with a sizeable headache. Our expert team is ready to assist! With sound advice and honest technicians who can help you decide if your unit is repairable.

What To Remember When Getting A Brand-New Furnace For Your Home

Many homeowners make the mistake of assuming the biggest unit available is the best choice in terms of furnace types and the comfort they provide. In reality, this is far from the truth. Here are a few important variables to consider when searching for the perfect unit to suit the needs of your home.

Should you decide to replace your existing furnace, consider a new high-efficiency unit like those manufactured by Amana.

  • The size of the unit in relation to the square footage of the area it will be warming.
  • The type of furnace unit that best suits your family’s needs.
  • The installation location for your unit.
  • The SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) of the furnace you are considering.
  • Ducted or ductless?

When it comes to furnace installation and replacement– our highly qualified technicians at Air Dynamics have experience and the proven track record to back it. So, you can rest easy knowing that you’re in good hands!
