Avoiding HVAC Scams during the COLD Weather Season

Cold weather is moving in fast! 🥶 Unfortunately, heating season can also bring out some dishonest HVAC contractors and their high-pressure tactics. To help protect our community, we’re exposing one of the most common ways these fraudsters pressure homeowners into making costly, on-the-spot furnace replacements.

Every homeowner deserves honest answers and reliable information when it comes to their family’s safety. Read on to learn about the “cracked heat exchanger” scam and what you need to know to protect yourself and your loved ones from falling victim to this costly scam.

Failed Heat Exchanger Scam

Failed heat exchangers are a common scam during the heating season. A technician arrives at your home, runs a few tests, then suddenly informs you that you have a cracked or damaged heat exchanger. As a result, they’re going to have to lock the furnace out for your safety. This will render it inoperable, and you’re going to need a heater replacement.

Leaving you with no heat and few options. Many of these companies may even try to pressure you further, telling you they have “a great offer” if you agree to a replacement today, which will ensure you’re getting your replacement at the best price.

Important Note: While a genuinely cracked or damaged heat exchanger may require furnace replacement, we’ve encountered cases where the previous company failed to properly test the heat exchanger or, worse still, there were no cracks or damage present at all.

Simple Steps to Avoid Falling for This Commonly Used Scam

1. Call a Trusted HVAC Professional.

If you’re concerned that your heating system isn’t functioning properly, reach out to our pros at Air Dynamics HVAC. Our certified technicians will thoroughly evaluate your system, provide you with honest answers, and recommend the appropriate solution without added pressure or unnecessary repairs.

NEVER let a technician pressure you into making an on-the-spot decision because of a “cracked heat exchanger”. Unfortunately, some companies use these high-pressure tactics to their advantage, leaving you without heat and pushing you toward an unnecessary and expensive replacement. They may even offer a special discount if you agree to replace your furnace that same day. Don’t let urgency prevent you from asking questions!

2. DON’T PANIC! Ask Questions.

If another contractor tells you that your furnace has a cracked or failed heat exchanger, don’t panic. Ask the technician to explain exactly how they determined the heat exchanger is damaged and what evidence supports their diagnosis.

If they cannot provide a clear explanation, STOP and consider contacting a reputable company for a second opinion before making such a costly decision.

3. Ask to See the Evidence.

Ask the technician to show you where the suspected crack is located and explain how they confirmed the damage. If you’re uncomfortable with their explanation or still have doubts, don’t be afraid to get a second opinion.

There are several methods for evaluating a heat exchanger, and the appropriate testing depends on the equipment as well as the suspected problem. This can include a visual inspection, carbon monoxide testing, combustion analysis, or other diagnostic methods.

No single test is appropriate for every situation. Ask what tests were performed and what the results revealed. If the diagnosis hasn’t been clearly explained or you’re unsure whether any tests were performed, consider getting a second opinion before agreeing to an expensive replacement.
